These are the key learning points you can expect:
More than money: The vast majority of pre-retirement courses and media stories about retirement focus on the financial aspect. Whilst money matters it is not the only thing that you need to ensure a successful retirement. In research we talk about different forms of capital. Finance is one of those, but there are also social, cultural and human forms of capital. We also need to think about how you can grow these and how and when you need to spend them.
The change before the change: Related to the first point I will cover what the evidence tells us about the keys to successful retirement adjustment. Crucial among these is the need for more psychosocial pre-retirement planning. Evidence shows that successful adjustment is not just about getting your finances and forms in order, it’s about adopting a positive attitude toward retirement, identifying the goals and objectives that you wish to achieve and how you wish to achieve them.
Going forward, giving back: We will also cover the power of generativity. Many people fear that when they retire they will no longer be able to play an active role in their social networks or society more generally. However, as far back as 1958 social psychologist Erik Erikson argued that as we approach later life we have greater capacity for generativity, which he defined as concern for others and the desire to contribute to future generations, often through parenting, mentoring, leadership roles, or creative output that adds value to society.
Martin has filmed a short video offering some insights into his session at the IFW Conference.
